Required Knowledge

Toi Gae (Toy Gay) also known as Hwan Lee, was a great Confucian philosopher during the Lee Dynasty. In 1534, he passed the prestigious national examination for the civil service and was eventually appointed to the highest position. He later resigned from government service to return to his hometown to become a scholar. His specialty was Joo Ja Hak (Confucianism). He founded the Do San Learning Institute where he spent the rest of his life educating his young disciples. He is regarded as the authority on Neo Confucianism. His interpretation of Confucianism, known as Toi Gae Hak is the subject of study in both the western and eastern worlds.

37 Movements represent Toi Gae’s birthplace on the 37th parallel.

Blue Belt represents the sky. As the plant grows strong, it becomes a towering tree, reaching for the sky and new heights. The student must focus his/her energy toward Black Belt.

Korean Flag (Tae-Kook-gye) the symbols in the corners represent the sun’s placement in the sky. The lower left symbol represents the early morning (dawn) when the sun is in the east. The upper left represents mid-day (noon). The upper right symbolizes twilight as the sun moves to the west. The lower right represents the total darkness of midnight. The ‘Um and Yang’ in the center symbolize the harmony (blue) and discord (red) that is ever present in the universe.
